Gaming PC upgrade order: what to upgrade first
A practical upgrade order based on common bottlenecks and failure points. There are no product prices here, just the decision logic.
The guide
- Storage: if you're still on a hard drive, an NVMe SSD is the biggest felt improvement per pound.
- Power supply health: an ageing, unbranded PSU should be replaced before a GPU upgrade, not after.
- GPU: the main lever for frame rate at 1080p and 1440p.
- RAM: go to 32GB only if monitoring shows you're running out.
- CPU/platform: last, because it usually means a new board and RAM too.
Always check PSU connectors, case clearance (GPU length) and PCIe generation before ordering.
